Funny, not mean: the line to walk
A birthday roast works when the person being roasted is the first one to share it. That means picking material they already joke about themselves.
| Roast this | Leave this out |
|---|---|
| Always running late | Weight, looks or health |
| Lying about their age | Breakups and exes |
| Terrible sense of direction | Money trouble or losing a job |
| Their 4,000 unread emails | Anything they told you in confidence |
| Their obsession with one band | Family conflicts |
Not sure? Ask yourself one question: would they laugh if their boss saw it? If yes, it is a roast. If no, it is just a bad day with a beat.
A good roast also ends on love. Add a last note to the topic, like “but we'd be lost without her”, and the verse has somewhere warm to land.
Cast the least likely rappers
Half the comedy is who is rapping. A deadpan dad and his brother, two grandparents in their Sunday best, the quiet coworker who never speaks in meetings: the more unexpected the pair, the bigger the laugh. A grandparent calling out their grandchild on beat is especially hard to top. The birthday person can also roast themselves alongside a friend, which takes the sting out of anything sharp.
Everyone on screen should be in on the joke, so only use photos of people who agreed to be in the video, and get a guardian's okay before including anyone under 18.
Funny formats beyond the roast
- The age denial: a full verse insisting they are still 29.
- The excuses list: every reason they have ever given for being late.
- The overhyped tribute: rapping about them as if they had just won a world title for finishing a crossword.
- The pet speech: their dog or cat delivers the birthday verse, using the pet cast instead of people.
- The fake complaint: “Why is it always your birthday?”
- The time capsule: their most dramatic phase, from a photo era they have already made peace with.
Where the laugh lands best
- In the group chat at midnight, where the replies become part of the joke.
- On the party TV right before the cake comes out, when everyone is in the room.
- Under their birthday post, so the roast sits between all the sincere wishes.
- In the team channel, if it's a coworker and the roast is office-safe.
Make 12 seconds count
A standard video is 12 seconds, a handful of lines. That is enough for one strong joke, not a stand-up set. Pick the single habit everyone recognizes and let the verse build on it. If you have more material, stretch to 15 seconds, or up to 30 seconds on the Ultra model for more credits, or make two videos and post them as part one and part two.
The House Party stage is preselected, with balloons, confetti and friends dancing behind you. Playing it on the TV at the party? Pick widescreen 16:9 before rendering.
